So this took me a few years to compile but I wanted to see what I buy that stands the test of time–or maybe a convenient excuse for not posting in a while. In any case, I have a running list of everything I’ve bought and looked at everything 2019-2021 to see if I still have the items towards the end of 2021 and again 2025, roughly 5 years later.
Of course, hindsight is 20/20 but I wanted to see whether I’d buy that item again if I were to be buying it today.
Now, I keep a list of things I want to buy rather than buying it right away. Sometimes, I’ll buy things that I really want that never make it to the list or sometimes buy things from my list from years ago that keep resurfacing. Supposedly, having a list is a good way to curb impulse purchases. But was I actually more likely to regret things that I bought that were not on the list?
I had a list of 324 physical items bought over 3 years. This excludes grocery store purchases and food eaten at restaurants, gas, and anything intangible. This does include specialty food items that I purchased (such as tea that I got with some other stuff online).
So, how’d I do? Of the 324 items, 240 were left once I took out food, consumables (such as soap, beauty products, and dental floss), and gifts to others (as those were given away and so, obviously, I can’t track them years later). Of that, I still had most of it or 88% at the end of 2021 and 70% towards the end of 2025. So, I’m keeping most of what I buy.
But even more interesting is what happens when I take out clothes and other fashion accessories. As we all know, clothes are my kryptonite when it comes to buying here so if I split up the categories between fashion and non-fashion items, there is a significant difference. I still have 85% of the non-clothing items whereas I only have 62% of the clothing items.
As for usage, overall, about 74% of items purchased was used while 26% were unused or barely used. This was slightly less for fashion items with a 66% / 34% split.
The breakdown of what I would repurchase overall sat at 60% yes, 11% maybe and the rest at no.
As for the wish list, overall, items on the wish list were a 66% yes on repurchase, 11% maybe and rest no for items on the wish list compared to 59% yes on repurchase, 11% maybe, and 30% no for those “impulse” purchases. Overall, I was surprised how little difference there was between the non-list items and the wish list items.
If I filter for fashion items, the wish list items were 59% would repurchase (vs 47% repurchase from no list) so there is some difference there.
So, what do I make of all this? Not sure… but my next stuff project might just be a declutter. Guess I’ll have to check in again in a few years.
